Assessment Methods in an Online Learning Environment

The methods of assessment included in an online course should depend on the needs and characteristics of the learners, the instructor, and the course subject matter.Do you agree? Provide your Reasons.

Deborah,
I love the fact that you mention "match". I have seen classes where the assessments and model answers did not match the feedback.

Shelly Crider

I agree. The methods of assessment must link to the course outcomes as well as the needs and characteristics of the learners. Some adult learners want to know the “what is in it for me” and understand how an assignment and assessment helps them reach career and degree goals. For example, a Project Management student may wonder about a test on what is in a project plan and prefer being assessed on writing a project plan. Also, assessments and model answers need to be developed to match the best means for the instructor to give timely feedback.

Nashid,
Good point. There is a difference, but there are some needs that could show through if not met. Let's say one need of the instructor is for the student to format a document a certain way so the instructor can be more organized. This is clearly a need and not necessarily a characteristic.

Shelly Crider

Ekwuniru,
This is true. If the instructor does not like the assessments, it will show through. The course subject does indeed matter with the assessments. Technology assessments should be different than English assessments.

Shelly Crider

I think the needs of the instructor takes a back seat to the characteristics of the instructor. To be clear, the characteristics of the instructor may include attributes that enhance the delivery and performance of the lectures and other follow up. But the needs of the instructor – rarely enhances the delivery of content.
