Quebec,
There is a lot of help programs out there from the computer to help create a great class, but bottom line is the knowledge that you load in.

Shelly Crider

I agree developers should have some very good working knowledge of the learning environment and what it takes to be a good instructor. However I don't think they have to be computer geniuses to do so. They are terrific communicators and analyzers adept in developing a very efficient Online classroom capable of satisfying students and instructors alike.

I agree with this statement. The developers should have an instructional design background, but they don't need to be tech wizards. They should be able to understand what types of resources - animations, videos, images, etc. - can align to the lesson objectives. They should also be well-versed in other instructional design methodologies like assessment to determine the best tools to use to help institutions provide well-structured courses. They don't have to know how to create the tech resources like the tech wizards would need to know; rather, they should know how to align them to course objectives.

While it is important to have some basic knowledge of technology, it is not necessary for an instructor to be a technological expert. It is necessary for them to be aware of the dynamics needed to make their online course a success for both themselves and students. It would be like assuming that a student will be a technological expert when they enroll in an online course.

LaToya,
I like how you added "their skills will improve", this will give the instructor more confidence to try more software programs as well.

Shelly Crider

Michael ,
Nice post! It is nice to collaborate work.

Shelly Crider

Shelly,

I agree. As long as they have an understanding of the material, and know how to navigate through the course effectively. I think they will be fine. Also, with time their skills will improve.

I agree that developers of online courses do not need to be technological wizards. They do need a good command of the basic hardware and software necessary for distance learning. Also, if there is a team that is employed to facilitate the course development process, this can help bridge the gap for the subject matter expert who is designing the course.

Marie,
I would add creating your own videos to this list as well.

Shelly Crider

Michelle,
There are many videos that can help you along the way. Do not be afraid to have someone help you or review your work.

Shelly Crider

I don't think you have to be a technological wizard, I think it is more important to know the content of your course and be able to provide the students with a valuable online learning experience than to be a technological wizard.

I disagree.

I am not saying that you have to be a 100% technological wizard. However, it will be difficult to put together an engaging online course without technical ability. You need to find ways to engage students and that is normally done through the use of technology. You also need to know how to use the LMS as well. If you don't, you don't know the capabilities of the LMS as well.

I do believe one needs some technological expertise before undertaking this task. For something so simple as creating a video some prior experience or knowledge is needed. Uploading and creating graphics, videos and images is not common knowledge.

Andre,
So many times features are not used due to just this fact.

Shelly Crider

I agree but it does help if they have an understanding of the capabilities of the technology available to help them take advantage of features to be used in developing the online programs.

Matthew,
Lots of help these days! You can even find help in Youtube!

Shelly Crider

Cynthia,
Research and play! Find some software programs and jump in.

Shelly Crider

Cynthia,
It is a bit different for everyone, but for me it is hands on. There is a lot of technology out there that you can view and determine if you want to try them and most will come with a trial period. Start with YouTube! Create yourself a YouTube video of what your class will be doing. There are many videos on YouTube as well to teach you how to do this.

Shelly Crider

Cynthia,
Hands on for me! The more you get in and try different technologies, or how to move around in your platform, the more you will soak up.

Shelly Crider

I agree. If an instructor would like to develop a course there is a lot of help out there in the online platforms. BlackBoard and MOODLE rooms both have online tutorials which is where I learned to develop a course. I am not a technology expert and I have managed to develop courses that are successful. The help is there if needed to develop and implement the online courses.
