Live Labs as a New Technology Addition
I have had the opportunity of using a live lab to help my students with practical applications for their coding problems. At first, I was afraid of the technology, but after I did it for the first time I realize how important it was for them to get the understanding of the homework they had to complete by themselves. I don't know that online school facilitates having study groups when you are hundreds of miles from the students. If anyone knows how that works I would love to know!
Phyllis,
I have used the live lab forum. I did not like it at first but then I became accustom to using it. I did have students have problem logging on to the webex site but the had dialed in by phone.
I had a powerpoint to discuss in the chat session so I emailed it to my students and we continued the live lab by phone and email.
I did not let the technical problems stop me and i found my students interacted more when i did this.

Phyllis, I am intrigued by the idea of using live labs. Where can I access this type of technology? Is it supplied by the textbook publishers? I would love to learn more about it!
Nicholas,
This is a great opportunity for students. Even if it can be done for midterm and final review.

I talked to an instructor that uses live chats for group discussions. She has her students sign in and then enter a live chat for their group and discuss and topic in the chat room. It is similar to a discussion thread but you get instant discussion. By limiting the number of students in each room it allows the conversation to not get overwhelming or hard to follow. The instructor can also monitor to help guide the conversation when needed.
Phyllis,
You can actually have online chats for a particular group of students....for most platforms that is. Check out and see if this is available for your platform. This gives students live time in a chat room.
