When deciding a pictures or animations to incorporate into the e-learning material copyright makes establishing your online content more difficult. Putting your facility in jeaopardy of legal action would not be beneficial. Take the time to research and ensure that what you want to use is free to use.

This is quite true. I believe that if we are going to be sticklers to our students using the proper citation methods or at least referencing their material, that we too must abide by the same practice.

Brian,
Check to see if there is any copyright on the item you are using. There is usually something stated.

A very good point. We do not want to find ourselves or our institutions marred by legal issues. Are there any documented cases of this? Also, is there any reference document for what we should look for to validate that we can use a media source in our courses?

Brian Stout

Robert,
Oh so true. We discuss how important it is to teach the students about plagiarism, when we ourselves need to make sure we are not violating copyrights!

Shelly Crider

Using any media which has a copyright should be carefully reviewed before using it. The creator has full use of their own material. However the user must be sure not to plagiarize or misuse the owner's material. If using any material with a copyright, be sure to get permission to do so to avoid any legal actions by the owner. When using any copyright material be sure to get permission to avoid any legal complications.
