I teach history and one of the techniques I use to engage students in the discussions is to either include a current event that relates to the subject matter or to note what happened on a given day in history.
Doing so provides students with some context and often illustrates how the topic of the discussion affects either the student directly or the world around them. I also find that students respond well to these techniques, particularly the current events.
