Ulises,

Very true - how have you integrated those tools you list in your courses? Which have you found most helpful?

Dr. Ruth Reynard

Louis,
Yes, the Internet provides access to information and allows eVh student to share information and work collaboratively on projects and papers ...

Dr. Ruth Reynard

The internet allows for almost endless access to information, ideas and communication. Chat rooms, blogs and twitter, face book, email you tube are all mediums that can be used to help with the instruction of a class. I think that one of the most important attributes that the internet brings to learning is instant information through any number of its mediums.

The Internet allowed the student to understand multiple area's of gathering information to gain the knowledge on a subject. It allowed power point to improve the visual learning style.

In my experience, the internet has made it easier to complete required training courses, while not requiring travel. At the same time you can speak to the instructor and get your questions answered. The down side is that there are too many restrictions.

As with newer programs that use the internet and blended learning, having the internet is a huge asset. Online courses for some programs are not limitted to time on site.

James,

Yes so that students can have a customized learning path...

Dr. Ruth Reynard

I think it provides more one on one changes to the learning process in the classroom. More ways for the student to learn from than one discussion topic.

Adam,
Yes, access is much greater, however, it also provides more direct and constant connection. How do you think this benefits the learning process as well?

Dr. Ruth Reynard

The student has more access to infomation while at home, making assignments easier to do & can be done anywhere.

wayne,
Yes, the Internet is a great tool for students to use to explore and use information, however, instructors must be the kind of facilitators that can support student learning in a way that is beneficial for the students: self-direction that is supported by knowledgeable instructors. How have you tried to find this balance with your students using new technology tools?

Dr. Ruth Reynard

I feel the internet has opened a new path to self education, student will learn how to find the information they need. we all know that we will continue to learn our whole life. We dont allways have someone to teach is, self teaching will binifit them the whole life.

Hank,

Great ideas - keep exploring with new technology as it emerges - Twitter can maximize thought development as well as simple communication. Think about how that could benefit your students...

Dr. Ruth Reynard

The use of the internet has opened students horizons. YouTube video clips as well as part of my PowerPoint presentations are helpful also, I have used poll questions in my online classes but never thought of using twitter as a teaching tool,Being able to obtain a vast array of information from so many different sources can be a big plus in the new age learning.

Kenny,
Great points! Also, the Internet provides tools for communication, discussion, and publication of ideas. All of these enhance the learning for students ...

Dr. Ruth Reynard

The internet had brought with it the ability to access a universe of information at your finger tips via the web. Also the speed of communication as well as the ability to communicate with each other: student to instructor and student to student.

Use of the internet is very helpful in adding additional streams of information for students to access through the use of links. This gives the more inquisitive students the ability to feel fullfilled in in their desire for information. These links also guide the students in gleaning information that will enhance their understanding by aligning the information to the specific points or theorys the course is trying to deliver, reducing confusion or information overload.

bob,
So again the instructor must function as a knowledgeable guide and facilitator, not the driver of the process, nor the occasional visitor. Balance is critcal...

In my case, the graphics that can be provided are fantastic.Since I teach a course that requires good visuals, the resources that are available to help drive the point home are endless and can help make my job easier. This can be a double edged sword, however. The instructor must not become lazy in his instruction or skills, and any info obtained MUST be scanned for 100% accuracy. Being able to obtain a vast array of information from so many different sources can be a big plus, but once again, the info must be proven accurate. An instructor can use info obtained from internet boards and chat rooms to his advantage if he allows his students to discuss what they have read and determine if what they have been told has any merit. I cannot stress enough the importance of instructor skills when implementing this style of teaching.

Eric,
Yes, there is an "immediacy" with the technology that increases potential for engagement, customization, and accountability. It is more obvious which students are not participating, as you say. I just facilitated an online chat session last night with some students and it was obvious throughout who was engaged and who wasn't. Good points!

Dr. Ruth Reynard

The aspect I like most about using the internet is that it brings student accountability into the forfront. It becomes obvious very soon which students dont want to do any work themselves and simply want to show up and put it all on the instructor. Those who put forth the effort on their time make a much larger contribution to the class discussions and to their own education.
