online tutorials

teaching a skill can sometimes be difficult when you have a classroom of 25. Most often, students do not see evrything that goes on. I would love to develop video tutorials and work on embedding questions for student participation so that the presentation is active and engaging

Dale,

Many instructors as to have a "dummy" student account that they use to see student views. This really helps with design.

Marilyn,
One of the issues I have is not having the same view that the student has. Our view looks a little different because we can see all the students. Sometimes a student will ask a technical related question about the structure of the class, but it is hard to answer because what he/she is looking at may not be what I see.

Frances,

Great idea. That is the way to really show them how certain technology works.

I share my desktop with students in my computer classes and demonstrate how to use the software but having a video with embedded questions is a great idea. That would reinforce what they had or had not learned in the demonstration/discussion before the questions. Good idea.

Debra,

There are several tools that will allow you to share screens. Google Hangout works well also.

Marilyn, other than the whiteboard and using pointers, students enjoy when I share my screen and show them how to format a paper using APA standards, or take them to websites or how to use find articles in the library. You can share files and even download music for students who attend early, just like when you attend a webinar. Breeze allows you to accommodate for a variety of learning styles and student perferences.

Patricia,

Good for you! You have found a tool that enriches your students learning and eases your workload! I challenge others other members of this community to look at technology in this way. Screen capture is a great tool to keep you sane and your students learning.

I use Jing almost every day. I will do quick explainations for my faculty on how to do something in LMS, and email it to them, and add it to my "Jing Library".

I also use Jing to grade essays - it is faster to talk through the areas of concern than to compose typed responses, and so far, the students love getting that "personal" feedback.

Once you record a segment, you get a url, just copy and paste the url either into an email, on the assignment itself at the top, or in the comments section of your LMS.

This is a great idea. Video tutorials will definetly give the students ideas and perception on some topics that they are not quite familiar/knowledgeable with.

Hi All,
This is a great idea! Do you keep these and use them every class or just post them as specific issues arise in a particular class of students?

Gretchen,

I also use Movie Maker that is part of Microsoft. Your school may have panopto, Tegrity, or Adobe Connect. You could also use Captivate and/or Camptasia.

Dr. Kelly Wilkinson

Marilyn,

You can use Jing as it is a free. There are also other products that have nominal fees. I use them quite a bit. I have my students do some recording also

Marilyn,
Another great tool is Adobe Connect aka Breeze. It has features that allows you to write on the whiteboard and use pointers to accent certain points in your presentations.

Marilyn,

If you have a Mac or access to one, I-Movie is a great way to build a video, add voice, music, special effects and make it entertaining and informative. I used this tool for my poster presentation and proposal defense for my dissertation.
