Annabel,
You make great points! All are important for student success!
Dr. Kelly Wilkinson
Hello!
I believe that the following are the three most important things to consider when selecting a new technology:
1. The technology needs to be appropriate for both the student and the instructor. The student and the instructor needs to find it beneficial and useful.
2. The technology needs to be user friendly and easy to use. In addition, there needs to be tutorials on the technology.
3. The technology needs to work on multiple platforms, so that the students can be able to utilize it.
Warm Regards,
Annabel
Sandy ,
You really show the importance of evaluation.
Dr. Kelly Wilkinson
Joseph,
How would you define "success" in technology usage?
Dr. Kelly Wilkinson
Earl,
You make great points, particularly the inviting language. We tend to neglect that.
Dr. Kelly Wilkinson
Linda,
How do these items intersect in the online learning environment?
Dr. Kelly Wilkinson
Perry,
I think you say the important question, does it work! good post.
Dr. Kelly Wilkinson
LaFanya ,
You have a big challenge in teaching math online. Students' access to the technology is crucial.
Dr. Kelly Wilkinson
Carolyn,
I love your 3rd answer. The ability to solve their own problem is HUGE!
Dr. Kelly Wilkinson
Linda,
Thanks for making that point! It isn't necessary that every too should be used( particularly for the sake of technology).
Dr. Kelly Wilkinson
Karen,
You make a great point. Is the technology platform and browser agnostic!
Dr. Kelly Wilkinson
revonna,
Great post! I do think we have to make sure that we don't use learning styles as a crutch.
Dr. Kelly Wilkinson
Linda,
Not everywhere. I teach two courses every summer that nontraditional students take. I use a tutorial recording that explains the different technologies that I use and I try to keep my LMS simple with no unnecessary icons or information.
Dr. Kelly Wilkinson
Linda,
Yes, instructors and students have to be proficient in technology tools.
Dr. Kelly Wilkinson
Christopher,
You make a great point that has not been discussed much; privacy. Do you have information about that in your syllabus. Do you use recordings in other courses in other semesters? FERPA is so important.
Dr. Kelly Wilkinson
Beth,
Oh there are. . . I love your last statement, "do the work well, on time, and on your own". I may use it in my training sessions. (I will cite you, of course:))
Dr. Kelly Wilkinson
Terry,
Great three points. I agree with all of them particularly with the 3rd one!
Dr. Kelly Wilkinson
Kimberly,
You are SOOO right regarding your last statement. We have to ensure that the technology cannot be the barrier to learning.
Dr. Kelly Wilkinson
Gregory,
You make great points! You rally have to assess the tool before and after usage. Good post!
Dr. Kelly Wilkinson
First and foremost, when I design an online courses I seek to leverage the tools my students are already using in their day-to-day lives. For example, I use ECAR Study of Undergraduate Students and Information Technology, 2012 | EDUCAUSE.edu http://www.educause.edu/library/resources/ecar-study-undergraduate-students-and-information-technology to help inform me.
Second, I try to see what business are using in terms of technology so that the students are learning skills that can be transferred into the workforce.
Finally, since I teach educational technology, I try to find emerging technologies - e.g., augmented realty that students might find interesting.
