Wiki in the virtual classroom

I have not had the opportunity to use Wiki in the online classroom and unfortunately am not to familiar with it as a tech tool. I have a colleague who is very tech savvy and I am going to meet with her so she can give me a hands-on learning experience with it. I think it would be a great tool to utilize if done properly.

Genieve,

Glad to be of service. Wikipedia can be a great place to start but never end in a search for credible information. I also use it as an example of poor citing.

Dr Kelly,
Thank you for sharing this information. Until I enrolled in this course, I thought that "Wiki" was only used as a search engine on the internet. Now use it makes perfect sense to me as to why Wikipedia can not be used as a credible source. The online institution that I teach for does not allow the students to use Wikipedia as a reference. Know I see it is because the content can be manipulated.

Michael,

I don't know about wikis but I would look at what WordPress has. You may be able to track through the logs. I would look at WordPress.

Hi Kelly,

I actually have not utilized wikis in my classes either. Instead, I have used Google Sites as a platform for my students to collaborate on projects (notably multi-genre research).

You mentioned the documentation of editing (accountability) of wikis, and that component would be ideal. Have you found wikis to be versatile enough to create engaging web pages, or do you know of any website generation sites that would track user participation?

Thank you in advance for any leads!

~Michael

Richard,

I use the either wikispaces or the wiki tool in my LMS. Students use it as they can write a group paper and each can add to it rather sending a file around. It also documents who added what so there is an accountability factor I really like.

I am curious to know how wikis are used in the classroom effectively. In my previous experineces in education we have always veered away from using sites such as wikipedia. This was due to the site's ability to be edited. So with that being said, I am curious to find out more about how this can be a functional part of a classroom.

Jean,

Good for you! The best resource we have is each other. I love sharing and using what others shared.
