Online considerations
I think that it is important to set up your students for success from the beginning. Sending an email to students and giving them a few tips on how to navigate the VC may be helpful. Many of these students may be taking an online course for the first time and it may be a bit intimidating.
Ben,
I also use that. Announcements are very important tools and most LMS's will send an announcement email

Ben,
I also have students to answer student questions through a discussion. It engages students, counts a participation and helps me manage emails.

I post several announcements. As far as I know, students DO check them, but just to be on the safe side I will email students next semester and remind them to constantly check the Announcements section of the course, as I am always posting very important info there.
I do the same! I am always reminding students of how they can get a hold of me so that they always feel confortable in coming to me if they are having any issues with their online course. In my experience--students really appreciate this.
LaFanya ,
You may want to check to see if your LMS will send specific "set" emails particularly if they haven't accessed the LMS in a while or score poorly on an assignment.

Angela,
This is a great point! An email is a great way to communicate. Even thought I post announcements in my online classroom on how to access the VC, students seldom read announcements. I have now started sending out emails to constantly remind students to check announcements.
Angela,
I couldn't agree more. I also send several emails to my students throughout the term to remind them that I am available for further assistance.
Angela,
I agree! Giving students the ability for little success sets them up for success! If frustration is the first reaction they have that is quite a bit to overcome.
