Gaining Student's Trust

In addition to wearing several hats, how do we as instructors gain students trust for them to feel free to ask questions and make their concerns known?

krystal,

Great post. Many students find learning online does empower them regarding discussion. It is up to the instructor to create a safe environment for learning either f2f or online.

I think students can be honest and forward with their questions if they have no fear. I try to take this fear out of the equation by just being down to earth and sympathetic. I have found that by trying to "understand" where they are and giving them room to make mistakes will gain more trust.

Simone,

I agree with you. If you create and maintain a spirit of community with you a part of that it goes a long way toward trust. If you communicate regularly to demonstrate that you are on "their side" in learning; that goes a long way also.

I also believe it depends in large part on the learning community - how they interact with each other. Some students may jump completely and willingly into not merely the learning enviroment, welcoming and encouraging other students - it really depends on the course, student composition, etc. I struggle with the fine balance of being a facilitator that encourages and gives a gentle push to encourage all without being a "nag". It works sometimes, other times is more difficult.

Austin,

That is something that does take time, and time we may not have. I actually have had students from previous classes give advice to the new class on how to be successful. Most of the tips revolve around the idea of developing a relationship with the instructor. The instructor has to show students they are worthy of trust.
