This quiz question needs to be revised.

"Which of the following items is not crucial to the success of your course? A quality course should:
Answer:
A) Be well-organized and easy to navigate. Students should be able to clearly understand all components and the structure of the course
B) Include a course syllabus that identifies and clearly delineates the role that the online environment will play in the total course
C) Include an aesthetic design that presents and communicates course information clearly throughout the course
D) Always include online lectures with synchronous and asynchronous component."

This question is asking both which of the items are NOT crucial, as well as which of the items are crucial to a successful course.

Please revise.

Wenda,

You are right! Learning should focus on the content and/or skill. Students efforts should focus on that not trying to find things and always asking questions. That does lead to confusion and frustration. . . the online learning enemies.

Dr. Kelly Wilkinson

I think the question is fine. Let's begin with:

A) Be well-organized and easy to navigate. Students should be able to clearly understand all components and the structure of the course

- This is a crucial item. Organization and easy navigation can help the student. Students can be easily discouraged in some situations. If the content is confusing/ unorganized, their grade might reflect their confusion. When a student gets confused they may give up or stop work until they hear from an instructor. If work is halted, they may not get a chance to begin again (before the assignment is due). Organization can eliminate stress & save time.

B) Include a course syllabus that identifies and clearly delineates the role that the online environment will play in the total course

- This item is also crucial. A syllabus that is unclear can give a bad first impression to the student. First impressions can only happen once and it's important to get it right.

C) Include an aesthetic design that presents and communicates course information clearly throughout the course

- This item is crucial as well. The design of any web based item is important. For example: In online banking, I don't want to be confused by poor design. I should have no questions as to where to go to transfer money or check my balance. Companies pay web designers good money to design a user-friendly & attractive site. So customers feel at ease using the website. The course design is similar. You want students to know their way around the virtual campus. So they don't dread using it and you want the design to foster a good learning environment.

Lastly,

D) Always include online lectures with synchronous and asynchronous component

- The "and" & "always" were the giveaways for me. "Synchronous AND Asynchronous" is not always possible. As we've learned in this course, the lectures should fit the instructor's teaching style, consider the audience & fit course objectives.

Dr. Crews,

The wording of the question is a bit contradictory in terms of what it is asking. Please review the question.

Thanks.

Miriam,

The correct answer would be D) Always include online lectures with synchronout and asynchronous component. This is not always the case. Thanks!
