Feedback is a must!

Providing meaningful feedback is very important for the student. This communication between student and instructor can set the tone for the students learning experience. I find myself struggling each session with this element. It is important to be fair and consistent when providing feedback to your students. As it is important to set a positive tone; it is also important to let the student know the mistakes made and how they can improve in their upcoming task. I have also found that many students do not read and take advantage of the feedback you provide for them; but in contrast you have those that want to hear what you have to say and utilize that information to provide a higher quality of work for future assignments. For the most part a student wants to know the weak areas and where they can improve; providing feedback that correlates with the rubrics will enhance a student’s work.

Dara,

The key is (as you have stated) that they help the students, but don't forget that they help the instructor too. Grading consistency improves for the instructor. Thanks!

Rubrics allow students to see clearly why they received a particular grade and also provides guidance on how they can improve on future assignments.

Sharon,

Yes, detail is many times essential so that the students understands how to improve so they can reach the learning outcomes. Thank you.

I agree that feedback is very important. Since the face to face contact is absent in online learning, the more detail the better, when it comes to online learning feedback

Geri,

Yes, feedback is all about helping the students improve. If they do not know what they are doing wrong, they can't improve.

Feedback is necessary for the student know how they are doing.

Concetta,

Meaningful feedback is essential to help students improve. Thanks for your input.

This is the only way that a student knows their progress and understanding of the course. They do receive a numerical grade but that does not give them a true understanding of the course content.

They also look for encouraging and constructive words from their instructors as experts and role models.

This encourages skill building and overall confidence building.

Donna,

I'm a rubric lover too and it's helps everyone: instructor and students. The feedback should be constructive, frequent and positive. Thanks!

Providing meaningful feedback is vital to the student's learning and I think that Rubrics are a good way to provide fair and consistent feedback. Because all of the objectives are presented on the rubric,it is easier for students to see their mistakes and to learn from them.

Clairann,

Feedback, feedback, communication, communication, feedback, feedback, communication, and communication. Did I say feedback? ;-)

Yes, they are very important for learning and for good teaching evaluations. Thank you.

I am in full agreement here. Students do not like to read. We live in a world of instant response and reading takes time and thought. We need to keep motivating students to take the time to read especially things like directions.

Kathleen,

I am glad you are finding these modules helpful. Having students self-assess helps them review their work and edit it before submitting it for evaluation. It also helps them make sure they understand the components of the project so that there are less question,

Thanks.

Hello,
I agree with what you are saying here. Students are always looking for feedback. I find that the rubrics are extremely helpful, along with making specific corrections on papers. I would like to incorporate more self-assessment in my classes.
The other thing I liked from this section was the directions for peer reviews. Peer reviews can be very effective when carried out correctly, but students struggle with them too. Does anyone have suggestions for anonymity in peer reviews?

Megan,

Thanks for your input in this forum. Another person had mentioned the sandwich approach, but I like that you touched it with a smile!

The feedback should help student improve.

Nice job.

I agree fully with your post. Feedback is essential in the student's understanding of what they did wrong, but maybe more importantly what they did right. I always like to provide a smile sandwich when possible. A positive comment, constructive criticism, and then again a positive comment. I always tell my students that they should pay close attention to both the good and bad feedback and use that as they move forward in the class.

Julynn,

Thank you again for your input. I'm thrilled you connected providing feedback with the rubrics. I also have students complete self-evaluation using the rubric and peer-evaluation using the rubric prior to a project being submitted to me for final evaluation. That is helpful as well.

Thank you.
