Rubrics
I use the Rubrics grading system with my online students. Its much easier to give them feedback on what area of their learning skills they need to focus on. With each student it is different. I like to keep a hardcopy of the rubrics system per student not only to give them feedback but also show them what they are improving on as well.
Alan,
Excellent summary. Thanks for providing that information so others can learn from these forums.
Thanks!
That works for me Tina!
- Rubrics set expectations for students and instructors.
- Rubrics let students zero in on the key aspects of assignments.
- Rubrics promote completeness and accuracy of grading.
- Rubrics allow an instructor to defend his grading and for students to understand their grading.
Kenneth,
Right on. The more they understand the expectations, the better. Thanks for your input.
When we let the students see the rubrics beforehand it allows them to know exactly what to expect from when we grade the assignment.
Leah,
Right on. The consistency can be obvious using good rubrics. Nice job.
Many of my colleagues and I use the same exact rubric. This is very valuable if a student questions where their grade came from. I have had a few complain they felt they deserved "more" points, in that case I often ask my colleague to do an informal grading of the project. As we all use the same rubrics we often within 1-2 points of each other. This is great validation to the student in terms of consistency.
Lisa,
The key is that rubrics are helpful to the students and the instructor. Thanks!
Rubrics are extremely important and a wonderful way to let students know the expectations of the assignment. It takes the guesswork out of it.
Ginny,
I love rubrics. Anything that helps the students understand the expectations more clearly and helps the instructor assess more consistently, has got to be a good thing. ;-)
Hi Tina,
I use a series of rubrics for my online students as well. It makes the grading system concrete. While providing feedback, do you also give a copy of the rubric to your students? Often times, I have students that may understand the assignment and work hard to complete it, but have limited writing skills. Sometimes, I find these difficult to respond to because I am aware of some of the disadvantages the student might have. What do you do under these circumstances?
Thanks,
Ginny
I agree Tina! The students need to know how they are being graded. Without this wonderful tool they will not know what specific area they need help in or what specic area they are doing well in.
Tina,
I'm a lover of rubric and am glad you are using the. They're helpful for the students and the instructor.
Thanks again for your input.
