1. The level of detail provided to the student.
2. The tone of the feedback provided to the student.
3. The connection to the learning objectives for the module orcourse.
Scott,
The simple words "begin fair" says so much! You are also right on with working toward students improvement with the criticism having a learning objective. Thanks!
Scott,
Postitive, yet constructive, meaningful feedback is very helpful for students. It helps keep them on track and offers an opportunity for improvement. Thank you.
Without repeating what the course and other students have said. I believe they are:
1, Being fair
2, Judging each student on their on merit.
3, Making sure the feedback applies to the assignment.
I don't like repeating so I didn't include what everyone else said nor what the course said.
But if you want what the course said, it would be:
1, Be nice and sandwich any criticism between positive statements.
2, Be specific
3, Make sure any criticism has a learning objective, not a grade justification.
Thanks
Scott May
I normally try to answer these questions with different answers from the other students in this course.
But I have to agree.
1, Constructive Feedback is critical.
2, Timely feedback
3, Last, make sure it applies to the assignment given.
Thanks
Scott May
Brian,
I use the 24 hour rule as well. If students don't hear back from me in 24 hours, they know something is wrong. Thanks for your feedback in these forums.
The 3 most important to me are: Respond within a day, much sooner if possible., Provide guidance, or clarification if needed., and Let them know they are doing a good job.
Charles,
Thanks for your input. You are so right. For the feedback to be meaningful, it must be individualized and sandwich some constructive criticism between positive information.
This does go a long way.
First, the feedback should be very personal and directed to the student on the individual basis.
Second, the feedback should contain positive comments.
Third, the feedback should contain corrections and ideas that the student could have used to succeed on the assignment. These three things will go a long way.
Rose,
Thank you again for your input. Being clear, specific and complete are essential. Many times (depending on how many students you have) being prompt is hard, but you are correct in that it too is very important.
I like the comments about being positive and helping students improve. That's what it's all about.
I believe the feedback should be clear, specific and complete. The feedback should be prompt which needs to be delivered on time. The feedback needs to have positive tone and touch the points for improvement.
Quiana,
Yes, targeted, specific, consistent, timely, etc. Good words to be associated with meaningful feedback. Nice job.
Meaning feedback should be targeted and specific. Giving examples and means of future improvement. It should also provide the student with both positive and negative feedback and if possible a recognition of growth.
Jo Ann,
You are correct. Simply stating that they did a good job, but not giving specifics is not beneficial to the students. Staying connected to the objectives and criteria (both in the rubric) should be connected to the positive and constructive feedback.
Thank you.
Sherrilyn,
Totally agree. Begin with positive feedback, add some constructive criticism if needed, and be specific. The frequency/timeliness is many times the hard thing to do, but so important.
Thanks!
1. The type of feedback you provide should be useful to the student in future assignments..."Good work" or "could be better" does not help.
2. Limit it to the objectives & Criteria of the assignment
3. Provide both positive feedback and suggestions for improvement
I believe the feedback should be:
-Timely feedback is most important
-Positive feedback is needed to keep the student engaged with the course
-Specific feedback provides the student with clear direction as to how they can improve.
Hima,
You are right. The feedback must be relevant, meaningful and help students learn more through the assessment. When students receive feedback they feel is individualized and helps them excel in the class, they are more likely to pay attention to the feedback.
Nice job.
By developing a meaningful feedback, the author of the online class will be able to assess the student’s performance and should include questions related to their learning. Individualized feedback is useful because it is specific to that person Student feedback can also be written, auditory or visual based on the requirement of the student.
Jason,
I do check more often than I tell students, but I also run a Frequently Asked Questions Discussion Board that other students can answer for extra credit. After the first couple of weeks, it seems to take of itself, although I do check briefly each day. But, briefly, as other students are doing the work for extra credit.
And, I mean minimal extra credit. I give somethiing like 5 points extra credit out of 400 for the total class. Once a student answers another student's questions on the FAQ discussion board and it is correct and complete, I email that student thanking them for taking the time, etc. This encourages them to continue.
It works for me.
