Evaluations
I think the best evaluation method is the use of questions. Asking questions will provide me with areas I need to improve in my course.
Julie,
I ask for formative feedback from students and do end of course evaluations - both anonymous. You're right - you get good information. Thanks.
Barbara and Elizabeth,
Thanks for continuing the conversation. It sounds like you are "getting into the students shoes" by asking yourself questions as well. Nice job.
Cally,
Informal evaluations still provide good feedback. Just keep involving students in the process. Thanks.
Diane,
A variety of assessment and evaluation avenues are good. Different perspectives are good.
Thanks.

Anonymous instructor evaluations from the students gives me the best feedback.
Elizabeth, I agree that questions are great way to provide areas of improvement. I also think that asking myself questions as if I were a student helps also.
Questions are a great form of evaluation. I also believe it should be yourself and your coworker or superior doing an evaluation. This gives different views on how to fix or change anything.
I like to use forums as an evaluation process also, this is a bit more informal than the end evaluation but I find students more eager to share their thoughts about the course on there.
Fred,
I agree. I use both types of questions as well as they provide a variety of feedback this feedback and can be used to update the course learning objectives, rubrics etc.
I prefer both open ended and closed questions on the evaluation. The majority of evaluation have a rating system. Usually the questions are weight the same.
Elie,
Ah - that may be true. Each institution is different and they may seem more generic a some than others. It's nice when the instructor can add a few of their own questions to tie it to their content. Thanks1
Yes I would agree with that statement. The only thing I find with these type of evaluations is that they are too generic. They need to be more specific to the subject matter being taught. Even though I find these evaluations to be helpful I also sometimes find myself wondering if a student just filled out the evaluation, because they had too and are not as forthcoming as needed.
Nadia,
Yes, you can ask closed and open questions together (direct/open) in one survey and you will get ample data from the students. Careful wording is always key. Thanks for your input.
I agree, asking direct questions does allow for the most accurate feed back regarding evaluations. However, Open ended questions will give even more insight as to how the student truly feel in regards to improving course material, developement ect..
Nadia
Elizabeth,
And, ask questions of the students, your peers, others you meet a conferences, etc. The more the merrier. Thank you.
