Creating an Online Course

Why is it important to center the modules and content of an online course around the student?

Shannon,

There are efficient ways to meet synchronously with students which provide the face-to-face (F2F) time wiht students. Keep engaging your students. Thanks!

Unlike the on-ground classroom setting, online courses do not afford us the face to face accountability of students as instructors. By centering the course around the online student, we engage them through the accountability of what they already know and then build on top of that foundation.

Jessica,

It is also important do to some type of diagnostic assessment to determine the student knowledge base. This helps you determine how quickly or slowly you should go through the necessary material. Nice job.

Charles I agree with your ideas. It is important to have a knowledge base to guide and build the course around. I believe that is why the Module template to test and revise and to create a learning objects database. I also think it's a great "life lesson" to be as involved as they can be. They are ultimately in control of their own level and involvement. Thanks for your post.
Jess

Kerri,

For sure. When the students see the connection between the content and their lives, they are more engaged.

I agree! Centering the subject and content around the student will help ensure that the student is interested in the material and will continue to be engaged and involved in their learning.

Thanks!

Charles,

Goodnquestion. There are couple of thoughts about this. When you identify what students already know about the subject/content, you are centering the content around what theybalready know first and then you can move more quickly into information they don't know. Also, centering around the student relates to developing a student-centered course where they are involved in the learning and become more responsible for their own learning. The instructor becomes a facilitator of learning and not just a content provider.

Thanks.
