Online class discussion

I do use discussion issues in Discussion Forum outside the text book and ask the students to participate and answer atleast one more student's answer with constructive criticisms.

Stacie and Shafi,

Nice job. The scavenger hunts I think bring some stimulation to the conversation. Thanks for sharing.

Shafi, I couldn't agree with you more. I create topics outside of the discussion that are fun, and interesting, and relative to real life. I've done online icebreaker discussions. I have also created virtual scavenger hunts within my discussions. Anything to stimulate the learner, the subject matter, and to take it from drab to truly enlightening.

Tracey,

Yes, definitely. If you keep the connection between the discussion forums and the course materials, students will understand why they are doing what they are doing - hence "the connection." Thanks!

I think that is a great idea! I too tend to utilize discussion questions in the forum outside of course work. However, it does relate to the material. I find in doing this, student are more engaged.

Hector,

Those type of probing questions are good to stir the conversation. I also group students and assign one group per week to provide a probing question on the discussion board. That way the students are involved and learn how to ask better questions. Thanks!

I typically like to added one or two additional thought provoking questions to my students, that are particualry related to their specific program their in. I think it helps them to understand some of the challendges their area faces in the REAL world today.

David,

I use a rubric that I share with students and they use the rubric to stay on task. Grammar and spelling might be a part of it, but substance is the key - not the length. Hope this helps.

Dr. Crews,

That is a great point. Where do you draw the line between constructive criticism and unfair assessments between students? For example, I have students who will assess other students grammar, spelling, and length of posts. To me, that isn't constructive coming from another student...it should come from the instructor. What are your thoughts?

David Pittman

Shafi,

The more we help our students learn how to give constructive criticism, the better. It's a skill they need to learn. Thanks for your input.
