EL 103

The syllabus is the vital tool to produce for students enabling the learning outcomes and learning objectives to be successfully implement and achieved by the students.

Douglas,

Hmmm. . .see if you can get input into your own syllabus. At least you should be able to expand on assignments and projects as long as you meet the course objectives.

In my situation the syllabus is basically put out by our curriculum department and there isn't a lot of movement away from what they put out. My challenge will be how to do any online course work which will not run against the curriculum department.

Sarah,

I try to connect everything to the learning outcomes. Other rules like netiquette, I refer to professionalism. Hope that helps.

Denise,

That is does. Many times students cannot see the big picture by themselves. Thanks for your input.

What are good ways to help students to understand that the syllabus isn't just some rules and instructions that students might or might not want to refer back to outside of the first day of class? I have found that many students see it that way so I have had to work with them on explaining how it is a tool for ongoing use. I'm curious how other people address this issue.

It also gives them a good platform to begin asking questions so they can situate themselves in the big picture.

Kimberly ,

The syllabus is a key ingredient in the communication process. Thanks for your input.
