Teaching Online

I really think that the detail here in this course has allowed me to bring more light towards things that really improve the learning process. What is everyone else s thoughts here?

Kelly & Mike,

I am glad you are learning through these courses and can implement/transfer things to your own classroom.

Dr. Tena Crews

Hi Mike,
Thanks for your post, I agree that this course outlines how to improve the learning process for students. The details are really helpful, and I plan on applying this knowledge to my classes and future classes.
Thanks,
Kelly

Tracey,

We all are lifelong learners. I tell my students that I learn something new every day. And, it's the truth. Thanks!

Yes I agree Mike. I've learned new technique in which I wasn't previously aware of.

kathy,

Semi-online - I'm assuming is a blended/hybrid course. See my other post about how to prevent cheating.

Thanks!

I have been teaching a semi-online class for 12 weeks for the first time. I am a bit hesitant to say i agree with online teaching. I feel there is definitely too many ways to cheat and get around doing the majority of the work. I have the over-achievers students it seems and the ones that hold back and wait to read what they wrote to figure out how to answer discussion questions. I have heard them talk about how they open screens in 2 different windows and take the quiz. I guess as long as you pay for the class that's all that matters anymore..

Julie,

Yes, professional communication is so important. Thanks for your input.

It is also hard when students communicate with each other to keep the slang and "texting" vocabulary out of the discussions. They need to be reminded to keep it "professional."

Fred,

It is difficult to me to get the content across and allow for reflection for students to understand what they learned in four weeks. I did take 15 week courses that were taught F2F and transformed them into two eight week online classes and that worked well.

Online schools are reducing the length of their online courses. When I went to school the course was 18 weeks long. We did not have online courses. Some universities have 4 and 5 weeks courses for a 4 unit class. Are we doing a disservice to the students by having short classes??

Lilia,

Many times teachers do teach the way THEY learn best and not how the students learn. We have to consider where the student is coming from and take them to a higher level. Thanks!

I think sometimes instructors forget that students are not at the same educational level as they are. Faculty provide feedback above the student's level of undertanding or the comments are too general for the student to understand what the instructor is trying to say.

Bruce,

I am so glad you learned some things in this module. Keep asking questions and try new things. Best of luck.

I am an on-ground instructor, my program is moving to an online platform. this course has helped me to make that adjustment.

Mike,

I'm glad this course has helped you in your teaching. It's important that we, as teachers, continue to learn how to be better and continue to be lifelong learners. Thanks!
