Scaffolding
Scaffolding is needed with students of all ages and at all levels of ability. There is no doubt, however, that scaffolding is most helpful to the struggling students. The word describes the process.
Kevin,
Scaffolding is a great way to help students build their learning to a higher level. Thanks!
I agree. This is very useful to the process
William,
Anything we can do to help students more deeply understand the content and put their knowledge to work, the better. Thanks!
This is the first time for me also, but it validates a technique I ( and I'm sure many others ) have used in my math classes. Specifically, I tell my students that I can either give them the algorithms or formulas and tell them how to use them, or we as a class can take what we already know and prove something we don't know - namely, the same algorithms and formulas. At first, the class would rather be given the solution approach, but after deriving one or two formulas, the students seem to appreciate the process of putting their knowledge to work.
Steve,
I tell my students that I learn something new every day! Glad you did too. It does make sense. Thanks for your continued posts in this forum.
This lesson is the first time I've heard the term 'scaffolding' used. But it makes perfect sense. I realized how this already applies to previous courses that I created.
Eric ,
It's good to learn new things through these professional development opportunities. Scaffolding is one term that basically defines itself. ;-)
I had never heard this particular term before in relation to a teaching structure, but once it was explained, I realized that is was a technique we already used both in over-all program structure and also within the different classes in a program.
It was very helpful to see the suggested steps of scaffolding laid out during the module. There are a few steps, such as reducing uncertainty and creating momentum that will occur multiple times, but the refresher was well worth while!
Nancy ,
This is one term that does pretty much describe itself. Thanks for your input.
