Communication
Without proper communication we can loose students in online environments because they do not feel as though their needs are being met. Some students feel that if an instructor does not respond to their discussions, in many cases that the instructor does not care about their learning. Being an interactive presence for the students in an online environment encourages more participation and a feeling that the students and the instructor are working towards the same goal. To increase the knowledge base of the student.
William,
Interesting you should mention students' "online personality." I have done some research on learning personalities and we do have to think about that in our online teaching. Thanks.
It's easy to communicate course related information (syllabus, procedures, assignments, visual presentations, and other instructional materials, online. However, it is more difficult to communicate feelings and emotions. With online instruction, it is important to connect to the students and create rapport. The development of an "online personality" requires creativity and effort on the part of the instructor.
Agnes,
I always put in my syllabus that students should use proactive communication in the course and in their careers. I think, as you noted, we have to continue to emphasize the importance of communication. Thanks for your input.
I think it is crucial to show the students how important good communication is in their careers.
It ties to professionalism.
So many students want to run their own businesses, yet they have a limited ability to express themselves eloquently. Many realize good communication skills are essential to a successful career.
Broderick and David,
I love that you are emphasizing professional communication. Keep up the good work.
Thanks!
David,
I totally agree with you. That is why I always point out to all my students the importance of communicating properly in order to succeed in their careers. However, we always see over and over the amount of students that believe communication is not important and that they will not use it in order to compete for an important position in the companies where they work.
david,
Communication is a key factor in keeping students engaged in the learning process. We don't want students thinking we don't care. Thanks!
