Communication
Communication to students is absolutely vital! Daniel and Wilfong (2014) emphasize the value of communication in the healthcare field. Working in the medical field, I especially realize the need for communication in ALL venues (in the workplace, online, etc.). In online courses, I work hard to minimize potential communication barriers.

Giselle,
Right on! Communication is important in all aspects of life. We have to keep the communication flowing. Nice job.
Communication is not only essential in the online classroom, it is essential for a successful career. By modeling appropriate communication in a clear and concise manner, it teaches students how to communicate with each other as well as in their varying roles outside of the classroom.
Christine,
Communication is the key to so many things. It is a team effort. It can't be a one-sided thing, but we all have to do our part in the communication process. Thanks!
Communication is so important in all walks of life. Whether it's in a relationship, at work, or in the classroom, without communication one can only speculate what is going on in the mind another person. However, in these situations certain clues can be recognized through physical appearance and mannerisms unlike that of an online learning environment where verbal and written communication are relied upon. Without this communication there is no way to know what is going on in the mind of a student. I have learned that many times students are afraid to communicate their personal situations, or struggles within the classroom for fear that the instructor will not care or understand so I am always sure to encourage my students to communicate with me no matter the situation and try make myself more relatable in hopes that they will feel comfortable enough to keep me in the loop of what may be affecting there performance within the classroom. This way we can work together to ensure the best chance for success within the course and avoid the student possibly giving up.
Karen,
Keeping the communication flowing is a good way to model your communication with students. They typically reciprocate as well. Nice job.
I find that the more you communicate with the students, the more the student engages in the course. Also, I find that personal emails and phone calls are very powerful in motivating the student to submit work.
Keith,
So true. Once they get behind it is SO hard to "play catch up." It's important to help students understand this as well.
Thanks!
I have found that communication is indeed vital. Especially in the first week of class. It seems that once a student is lost early, they are lost for good. Lol
Thank you so much. I appreciate your confirming comments.
Heidi
Heidi,
I couldn't agree more. Communication occurs in a variety of ways in online courses and all are of equal importance. Thanks for the references that we can add to our "must read" list. Take care.
