Online Collaboration

I am interested in getting some insights as to encouraging and promoting online collaboration among students. What do you think? Why?

Kevin,

One of our departments on campus uses OpenQuaq which is the same virtual world design. The swear by it....My experience with it suggests it is just another nice tool to have to build interactivity between participants.

have you looked into using the virtual world Second Life as a way to improve engagement and interactions online? I find that synchronous chats are good, but they filter out expressions and nuance that a virtual world can replace or at least simulate.

Elizabeth,
Excellent questions. The books and websites devoted to this topic are varied and numerous. You may want to start with the Sloan group. Your instructional approach, content area and student demographics will play a large role in which techniques you actually implement. Keep these three components in mind as you research the many available tools and techniques. Thank you for your great question.
