I really like including YouTube videos with my course materiel. There is a wealth of information to be found there, and from many highly reliable sources. When I use the videos, I ALWAYS provide the url of the video, as well as a link to the website of the person who created the video.
June,
Thanks for the post.
I am confident that it was someone "testing the waters" to see if they could get some money claiming a violation and harm of some sort. They probably claimed that a student paying for their class was synonymous with paying for their content ( who knows???) It was brought up to us instructors in one of our meetings as something to keep an eye out for.
I understand that there are copyright as well as trademark laws out there - as well as requirements for the owners of those copyrights and trademarks to do their due diligence...ie - file, get approval and then show active protection of that copyright / trademark... I have also seen where some have been tested and contested and somewhat vetted in the internet space, but it was an eye opener for me to see that discussion happen in the first place.
Thanks,
Joe
Hi Joe,
Thanks for your comment! It is actually a great question, and I happen to teach a course in communications law and business law!
So first, in order for the person or company to enforce the copyright they have to first file for the copyright.
Most creators think they have an automatic copyright by date, which they may, but it cannot be enforced without filing.
Second and more important, the use of copyrighted material, and the prevention of the use thereof, is limited by the following exceptions :
Procedure- must register to enforce
Rights-except fair use-parody, education, critique
Our purposes would most probably fall under the education exception, as long as we are not charging to view the material!
Thanks again for reading and responding to my post!

June,
One of the Institutions I teach for actually ran into some copyright and trademark issues when instructors started using videos , Utube clips, audio clips as part of their classes.
I believe the issues got resolved, but it is something to keep in mind when using video and other media.
Thanks,
Joe
