Time and the Student
Each facilitator should set aside time for unexpected student behavior and for unexpected events that affects the class room.
Do you have a minimum amount of time that you require yourself to provide to students?
If you do what are the reasons you fail to provide that minimum amount of time per week or per unit for each student?
Hi Albert,
I have found that if I set "office hours" the students do respond well. I often use the instant message system provided by the school. This way it is private. Phone calls can be very effective in helping to connect with a student and provide a sense of personality. At the same time, I have also been called at all hours of the day. I do think that students forget that instructors have lives too!

Michael,
What types of things have you been doing to prepare for this experience? Have you been thinking about what types of online activities you want to include to match the quality of your traditional classes? Can we help you think through this process? What questions do you have?

I am looking forward to begin teaching a partial online course, the same course I am now teaching but all class and lab time.
James,
I would agree the student needs to feel that you are both available and willing to help. Your turn around time is great. This short of a time frame should give the students what they expect. Have you found any students abusing using your cell phone number? Excessive calling, calling late, etc.? Do you give the students clear expectations regarding communication at the beginning of your course?

I am open to the student about 8 hours per day. I have supplied them with my email and cell phone number and usually respond back to emails within 2 to 24 hours. I have weekly office hours. I think it is very important that time is provided to each student.
