Student Bio

I always use the student bio as their first assignment. They get to know a little about each other and I get to know them. I also share my own information for them. Sometimes I find students saying hello to other students that they have been in class with before.

One other question that I add is asking them what they want to get out of the class. This helps me to focus on their needs also.

Hi Joan, I like the idea of using the information from the learner's bio as a stepping stone in communications! Tina

I also begin with my own. I think it helps students to have an example of what information they can include and to set a "casual" feel to the discussion. This helps them feel comfortable from the beginning. I use information they provide when I contact them as a stepping stone and to help them feel as though I know them.

I agree Ann. It also provides an opportunity to learners to build trust with one another to enable them to share their thoughts and ideas. Tina

My first assignment in all the courses I teach is geared towards introducing themselves. Teaching English requires a level of comfort to be able to get the analytical and creative juices flowing, and I think that when the students get to know each other it helps them not only know their audience but also eases tension in discussion.

The student biography is a valuable tool for opening the lines of communication between instructors and students and between students. One of my frustrations with my current online teaching experience is that I have no way of adding assignments or discussion topics. Consequently there is no way for me to add student biographies. I would love to use those as my initial assignment!!

I also do the same with starting the intro's with mine. I let them know I am a single mom with 6 boys and what you have to do is stay organized and prepared for any emergency...internet out, broken laptop, working overtime, etc.

Requiring students to respond to two of their peers is a great way for students to find similarities or connections with their peers which is a great way to increase student to student interaction.

I require a student bio in all of my onine classes. I also ask each student to respond back to at least two of their peers.

That is very helpful. I have done something similar utilizing the information they share in their bios. I find it helps be get to know the students. It seems I have more difficulty remember who is who because I don't have the visual reminders because I don't see the student.

I use a spreadsheet and write down fun facts about each student. I use that information to break the ice. It helps them feel a little easier around me and helps to build our relationship.

Great idea David. Certainly being able to customize some of the discussion questions based on the interest of the students is a great way to help them relate to the class material. Thanks for sharing the idea with the group.

You also get information on the student's educational background and professional activities. You can then use this information to come up with relevant DB topics and questions.

I like the addition that you suggest regarding asking the student what they want to get out of the class. For those of us that are teaching general education courses, another question might be to ask students how the class will help them in their chosen career field.

Thanks for comments Walda.
