Chatting

In our forums we have a designated time and space for chatting about a topic that I post. This is done in a real time, I.M. style of chatting. Although I often see digressions, it helps us learn about one another and can make it really fun. Has anyone one else had this experience?

We have an online chat at the school I teach at. It has really helped me to develop some sort of communication with some of my students. Those that do come to the chats enjoy it. The problem is getting everyone to the chat. We have talked about all kinds of things including personal situations. They discover that they have alot in common. They have found study buddies and discovered they are not alone. I think the chats are wonderful.

I agree it is important for students to have the option to share and interact with each other in the online learning environment.

Hi Emily, you could use any one of the free chat applications. A lot of times, students initiate communications with other learners and share their chat IDs, so if they are in the course at the same time, they can talk to one another. Tina

I wish I had live chat online. It would really help with walking students through questions and takes less time than email. I think its a very resourceful tool

Yes, I agree Tommy. It's important for students to develop presence and build trust with one another in order to be able to opening share their ideas during discussions. Tina

Hi Zane, we don't do instant chat online at my institution; however, learners use it to chat with one another when they are online together and have been used for learners to study together. Tina

Hello,

I think chatting is a great way to get the students to interact with one another. This can also build a great network with each other and help them learn the material. I encourage students to interact with one another as much as possible.
