Live Chat Sessions
How can I increase student participation in Live Chats?
Hi Jeffrey,
This has been an ongoing concern for many online schools. I add polls to test knowledge. Often times, I am frequently calling students by name in live chat sessions to answer questions or provide feedback/opinions. I found this to be most helpful. Thanks, Compreca
I find it very difficult to ensure that students attend the live chats but one way to improve attendence is to be specific in posting what the chat is going to be about. Get the student interesting in what you will be covering in the chat and let them know that you want someone there to bounce ideas off of and to make the chat more interactive.

Jeffrey,
What do you do now? Do you require a certain number of sessions that they have to connect? Do you provide extra helpful information that they have to connect to get? Sometimes giving the students a rather complex problem that would be difficult to complete on their own and announcing you will discuss it and work through it during the Live session might help. It will depend some on the content you are teaching as well. The students need to see the "value" in the live chats - so there needs to be some value to the chats.
