How do you make an online environment engaging and exciting?
How do you make sure your online class isn't boring?
Andy,
That is great that you include "real world" examples for your students. The more you can connect the course material to the real world and to aspects of the students' lives the more students will be motivated to learn the material and will have a better understanding of the material since it was provided in an "applied" context.

In my particular area of work, I try to give "real world" examples of things they may encounter in their everyday work and spend more time and attention on such topics.
Albert,
I would say the answer is the same for any class, online or traditional. You have to connect with your students, which means you have to know something about them. Your assignments should be engaging and "open" enough that students can apply their knowledge to something THEY are interested in. Make sure your assignments and activities are engaging and motivating for the students. Make the content real and relevant to the students' lives.
