Being present

Being present in the classroom is essential for a student to feel he or she has some type of support. Students need to know the instructor is there to help them and answer all of their questions or concerns. I find students prefer to use email or texting than actual telephones to speak with the instructor. All the different ways we can make ourselves present in the classroom are important for a student's success.

Nashid,

No, not unless your institution has a policy against it. I believe in connecting with students where they are. If most of them want to text, then I will try to text with them. I usually use texting as a backup to other connection mediums. I am not big on giving out my personal cell phone number until students are later in my program. That way they have a chance to understand communication norms so they are not calling or texting me at 2am.

Nashid,

Depends on who you ask. I would say that you need to be very connected at the beginning of the course with each student. The first couple of weeks set the tone for the rest of the course. If the students see you interacting with them early and often, they will see you as having a strong virtual presence in the course. You also establish those relationships early so students are more likely to come to you with issues or questions.

During the first, week, is it important to respond to each student post, each student, or just a few overall?

The volume of communication the first week seems to be far more critical than any other week.

I have found that students truly appreciate the ability to text message. The quick response can be very helpful, especially on weekend projects.

Does anyone see a problem with text messaging a student?

There are lots of ways to be present in the classroom and a show of continual presence is absolutely necessary. I always post at least once a week in the course announcement area. I always get back to students emails within a day, usually I get back to them within a couple of hours. I have regular office hours. I always respond to people messaging me.I usually do a couple Live Chats a week. I offer what ever help is reasonably possible.I offer guidance in the group projects area. I email the class with reminders and helpful information. I email students who may need extra help and offer it. And I interact throughout the week to the discussion board content.

Instructor presence is the glue for an interesting course and are encouraged. I 'go the extra mile' for students and most all appreciate instructor helps with emails, phone calls etc. etc. etc.

Patricia,

Well put. Our presence does set an example for the students. Our presence should also be a professional expectation for ourselves.

As an online instructor I believe that i have to set the example. If I am expecting my students to be present in the classroom. I must be present also. As a professional, I have to lead by example.

Marie,

Building a sense of community with your students and making sure you give them quick response to all communications adds to the idea of being present in the online course.
