What catches a Learners' Attention?
I am contemplating what is the best method to engage learners.
The first thought that comes to mind, is to use a scaffolding technique such that you take a topic in which a student has an interest and then build a project or assignment around it.
What do you think of that idea?
Do you have other ideas?
Hi Melissa, we have actually starting using our psychology lounge to help learners connect current events to the field of psychology in order to build the relationship with students and engage them in interactions. Tina
In additional to using a scaffolding technique you might also try connecting the course material to current events or media. Students often relate to what is going on around them, and helping them make this connection can lead to increase retention and participation. Try using a movie, commercial or even a news clip or article. I bet your students will respond favorably.
Hi Esther, I try to create different opportunities for engagement which includes engagement with the content. I like the idea of having learners choose a topic of interest; however, for learners with little prior knowledge, you may have to provide choices of topics to keep them from being overwhelmed. I also include strategies to encourage engagement with peers to construct knowledge through discussions that allow learners to think critically as they consider a variety of issues or topics. Tina
