Synchronous Versus Asynchronous Learning

Synchronous learning is effective and should be used slightly in courses. Asynchronous learning should be used throughout the course where students can post an intelligent, lengthy response to the instructor in the course. Instructors will have time to respond back to the student with feedback on quality responses. Asynchronous must be most effective because this training certificate that we are completing now at CEE is a threaded asynchronous learning tool. So based on the effectiveness on asynchronous learning is the best route to go from my expert opinion including the way this course is designed and used by The Center for Excellence in Education. Point proven!

I think it has to be a mix. I type and read slow. I would be very frustrated at not getting my points across and would feel pressured all the time. I think it also helps when you have the time to put well thought out and written points up on a board. With grammar and spelling all checked!

Interesting Lee. I have found that a mixture of the two methods to be most effective.

Don,
Many schools are beginning to implement systems that provide access to the recorded "live lectures" for those who could not be available for the real-time session. Very good point.

Dr. S. David Vaillancourt

It is effective if the career college or university would allow for the creation of podcasts that students can view not only in a synchronous setting but also as a source of review if the students schedule did not permit he/she to attend the synchronous session

Hi Jeff,

I find that both forms of communication and learning are beneficial. They provide different needs for the students. I find that when you use both you get a more well-rounded student, one who learns to communicate on the tablet and through speech.

Thank you all for sharing with me.

Hi Jeff, I agree that online lectures can be beneficial, especially when they are interactive. Tina

Huh, one of the online Universities I teach at centers the class around synchronous presentation of the core material, which is the exact opposite of what is recomended in this module. In fact, they tout this aspect as one of the benefits of the Universty over other Universities that are totally asynchronous.

After teaching at both Universities a while, I agree that there are clear and indisputable benefits to the synchronous lectures and wish more students would participate. Students who engage in the synchronous lectures and ask questions clearly learn the material better and perform better in the course.
