I've been fortunate to note have too many problems in this regard, but it does sometimes happen that there are problems. I'm always interested in knowing what strategies work best to help other instructors deal with the aggressive and hostile student...especially the one who just won't settle down. It isn't a common occurance, but it certainly can take a huge amount of time away from the rest of the classroom responsibilities.

Hi James,

I've been lucky enough to not have encountered too many students that are confrontational in a disrespectful manner. However, many of my colleagues have had this experience more times than they would have liked to. I think the best thing to do in this type of situation would be to ensure that you understand the situation and explain why a certain decision was made. Be sure to also include what the university policy is for a situation and remind the student of the conduct the university expects from them. If they still act hostile I would also include their advisor and your faculty manager or program chair into the conversation. This usually gets the student to back off since they believe that they can intimidate you into a certain decision. I hope this helps.
