Clicking and monitoring are not enough. You must check in on submissions, follow-up with missing assignments, and send a few "How's everything going" emails to the entire class.
I agree! Our retention and student-learning depends on instructor interaction. Our instructors send out 3 reminder emails per week, on top of all other interaction, and this really helps keep the students on track.

I can sum it up in one word: COMMUNICATION! Communication is vital in all aspects of our lives, and especially in online courses. Since the students don't see you in a physical sense they often feel disconnected from their peers and instructors. The more you communicate with them, the more they feel a part of the overall online community of learners. Peer to peer interaction between students is also important for the same reasons.
