FATQ - Frequently Asked Technology Questions

I really liked the idea of starting a FATQ - Frequently Asked Technology Questions. The suggestion in the training material included if a course is being taught for the first time, as students ask technology-based questions, the instructor should post the question and answer in the FATQ section. The second time the course is taught, the instructor can simply refer the students to the FATQ section to review questions; however, if additional questions occur, they can be added at that time.

This is easy to do and would be a great time saver over multiple classes. Has anyone used this idea in practice? Was it helpful to students and did it save the instructor time?

Samantha,

The discussion board saves me and the students so much time. Any course related issue is posted there and we help each other. Works for us. Thanks.

Hello

I have not used this practice but it seems like a great idea. I do have a general discussion board where students ask questions and anyone can respond. This usually turns into a pseudo FATQ and I find it helpful.

Cindy,

It's so great how we can learn from each other in these forums. I like that. Take care.

This is a great idea! I have not done this but I think I might now! Thanks for the insight.

Beth,

Tech support is a wonderful thing for students, but sometimes tech support can take awhile. Therefore, I agree, discussion board postings can be good. I do a FAQ discussion board for every class I teach. It is helpful.

I agree this is a great idea. We are asked to send students with any technical questions to Tech Support as the student screen and the instructor screen may be different and thus lead to incorrect information. However, there may be some basic questions that could be addressed by posting this type of DB (and get the blessing of Tech Support).

David,

We can give "canned" feedback yet add individualized information. It is a time saver. Thanks for your input.

Having taught my current course for 3 years I have a lot of "canned" paragraphs in response student's common questions. Like "I always get a 100 why did I have points deducted?" Answer: you earned 92 points.

I am now going to convert my boiler plate comments into FAQ and get a good start on applying this course to my day-to-day activities.

Jodi,

Me too. There can be so many questions in a course, so the FATQ would help students narrow their questions to one location. I have not done this specifically, but have divided up my discusson board with questions about certain projects or course content.
