Online Technologies
What existing online technologies are available to you, to incorporate active learning strategies into your online course?
Hello Bonnie,
I also use Blackboard, but I should also look into Eagle Vision. I also use Delicious.com.

Hello Renee,
I use You Tube for my introduction message. I also use media, images, different links to activities and fun stuff. I also conduct a live lecture every week using Collaborate. This system is user friendly and can be used to conduct fun and engaged lectures where the student can actively participate. I have also embedded motivating videos to make the class motivated.

Willie ,
Do they like your Camtasia video?
Renee Shaffer
I agree. Adobe is great! I have even used it to allow students the opportunity to both present and speak using their mics.
YouTube vids are truly a gift! I have also used them (although I forgot about it in my post). There are tons of videos on formatting APA! I have also created an video in Camtasia and used it to show students how to format APA.
OMG! There are many! I will just list the ones I have used or am using: Adobe, Google Treks, Electronic Sacaffolded Readings (websites), WebQuests, Blackboard, Screen sharing (which can e done with Adobe), Blogs...this list can go on and on. I have used all of these in online facilitating and f2f teaching.
Jenifer,
Oh, yes I love free! And I don't really think that students care one way or another as long as it works.

Our LMS is Moodle and we have access to the free and integrated M-Chat, as well we use Outlook's lync product, and have used WIMBA and BB COllaborate in the past. IT is pushing Webex on us, but as a small school, I'm all about cost effective. WHY pay for jabber and Webex when we have Lync for free?
Hi -
I have been using a live classroom lecture (adobe....and others) for a decade. This allows the use of Powerpoint or Prezi to provide real-time (and recorded) instruction. Students that desire the immediate interaction or audio/visual learning are also happy with this.
Incorporating video and podcasts throughout the course to stimulate thought and conversation is also important. Learners today are dealing with competition from their mobile phones and all other electronics. They expect an interactive and vibrant environment.
I also utilize such tools as powtoon to create more interesting announcements.

Mark,
Yes, at my institution we use both systems. Both are handy for their own reasons. Thanks for being in the class.

I use chats, Eagle Vision, Illuninate, and Blackboard. I also technology everyday in my classes to help engage the students.
This is an interesting question for me as I teach on-line at 2 schools, each of which uses a different LMS. Blackboard is a very hands-on system that allows for continual back-and-forth flow of information between students and teacher.
The other school uses Adobe Connect for *live* participation and I like that ability to *recreate* a physical classroom.
Christopher,
Sounds like your institutions uses a good variety of technology sources. Welcome to the class!
Renee Shaffer
We use email, blackboard, utube, web-links, reference library, articles, power point, and story line to name a few. We also have ISD and LMS personnel that assist us to capture our active learning requirements for higher education. The instructors trained and evaluated on the technology and the course content.
Vivian ,
I have tried it multiple times for many years now. I (being "old") have found it convenient and positive but it is now becoming "passe" for the younger students. At least that is the feedback that I have gotten in the past year. They seem to want less in depth interaction but something that is quicker like a text message.
Thanks for being in this class.

Fonzette,
Great variety of resources and interaction possibilities.

I teach the MBC program, and we use the 3m software to locate the coding. I first started off using the coding book. New technology that helps do the job smarter and not harder.
Thank You
LS
I use You tube and animoto to present videos in the course room to build community. The Learning Management System provides electronic syllabus, reading materials, assignments, discussions and other related resources. The discussions allow students to interact with their peers and the subject. Sometimes there may be assignments where students have to design spreadsheets where students engage in the activity. This increases the active learning potential with the combination of interacting with their peers and the completion of assignments.

Collaborative link, Skype, JoinMe,and Screencast-O-Matic are some of the online technologies I've used. Students really enjoy hearing an instructor's voice when answering questions. I'm not sure about communicating via Facebook. Renee, what is you opinion on instructors and students communicating via Facebook?
