Joe,

Great that your students will participate in live chats. I have a difficult time forcing them to do so.

Renee Shaffer

When i do my live chat sessions. They are usually centered around the weekly assignments, adding clarification and insight. I usually try to embed links to valuable and informative web pages that will help the student through the assignment process.

I utilize weekly chat rooms via our online classroom as well as white boards in lecture. I find that the chat room is extremely helpful for students with questions and review of prior lectures. Also the white boards really incorporate the feel of a on ground classroom.

One other technology that we can use is Kaltura videos, which add media from a personalized manner, meaning, students can see their instructions pre- record one particular 5 minute lesson that can be helpful and encouraging to the students.

Patricia,

The textbook companies spend millions on the supplements, so why don't we use them?

Renee Shaffer

There are several free online resources that I use in my course. The first is the resources provided by the textbook companies. I have the options that come with Blackboard, and the internet provides a great resource for providing information to supplement the lessons.

Discussion boards and collaborate sessions are amazing tools to use when incorporating active learning! I use them weekly!

I have pictures and boards to created a active learning enviroment for the students to understad a good dinamic processes the help students they like to be visual to learn a subject

We currently use Web-Ex, Blackboard Collaborate, and Screen-cast-o-matic. There are other tools that I would like to incorporate as well. I find that all active learning tools works well in an online course.

Elizabeth,
And I am sure that you receive good evaluations! :)

Tina,

How do you do your labs? What areas/ concepts are you teaching?

Renee Shaffer

Hello Renee,

Online technology can do wonders to help your students. They also help me by preparing the students for the information that they are trying to understand and retain. This alleviates headaches when grading test and essays. It also helps me feel great when I have a high rate of students passing in my course. Some of the tools I use are discussion forums, youtube.com, and blogs. These tools keep my student's engage and help them feel like I am reachable.

Weekly live labs through Connect enable real time interaction and feedback. Students have to do some homework and then "discuss" it.
I also have office hours so that students can book time with me.
One goal I have is to learn to use Prezi to encourage more active learning.

One technology used to create and incorporate active learning that we have implemented in our institution is KLASS. This allows the students to communicate with each other and allow for help with time management. I believe it is important to have a highly-structured active learning strategy (e.g., short writing activities, debates, case studies).

Lisa,
I have never used eye-jot but will go look at it right now. I wonder how user friendly it is for students with disabilities, ie. can you easily make a transcript.

Renee Shaffer

I like to use eye-jot and Jing to create communication with the students. Both tools are free and easy to incorporate into the discussion board, announcement board, and email.

We have the Adobe connect and can use the whiteboard as needed --

lisa,

It can really help students who may be more introverted and quiet in the classroom to have a voice.
Renee Shaffer

I love using the discussion board. That way, students really get a sense that they are 'heard' and active members of a group, which is the classroom.
