Important to develop relationships with individual students early on to identify the challenges that each may have during the course of the class. If those issues can be mitagated before the student becomes frustrated it will be much easier to keep them on task than to try to regain their commitment to completing the course.
I learned that communication is challenging with E learning.
Set guidlines and parameteers and make sure students understand them.
This module provided good information about the different characteristics of students who may have difficulties in online discussion forums and strategies on how to help them succeed.
I learned that it is important to communicate with students about how to resolve technical issues as well knowing how much time is going to be needed to complete the course. Many students tend to not schedule out their time correctly, and providing students with a study plan will help ensure their success.
Generally I would have thought of "face to face" or over the phone counseling sessions with students, but it is true that one could counsel via email which is an effective method in the online setting.
It is useful to understand instutional policies as how they effect e-learners. Understanding the each students' learning style is important to ensure student success and for keeping the class engaged and on topic.
On line is so different but so similar to face to face. Classroom management is essential, boundaries and clear expectations make navigating much smoother.
As in all things, communication is key to success. Giving students positive and appropriate feedback as well as offering private assistance will help ensure their commitment to complete their assigned tasks.
I found it interesting that many of the online student negative behaviors are much like traditional classrooms. It is important to recognize the style of the learner in order to reach them and not alienate the learner from the course. I think the constant communication and record keeping is something that I will have to pay close attention to, but it is very important to have a record of student progress as well as your efforts to assist them.
It is essential to choose a system to maintain record keeping which allows you to stay organized. Email is the main way students may communicate with an instructor and students should feel they have your attention when they seek help. There should be guidelines provided to students about email so that you do not get overwhelmed with this.
It is also important to recognize different types of students and address any issues they may have.
Interesting defining the types of students makes me remember particular students I've come into contact with.
The recommendations for how to maintain course records and communications with students are essential to managing online instruction. The section on behavior management with the descriptions of student behavior and how they impact instruction was a good resource.
What have you learned from this module?
I learned to pay attention to the noisy learners and send an email to the learner indicating to remain on the existing thread until exhausted. There are quiet learners, disruptive learners, intimidators, and procrastinators.
How do you intend to apply it?
I plan on applying the techniques that I learned by observing my students to find out what type of learners they are.
We moved to online learning mid semester so we already knew each other and I knew their learning styles and personalities. Next semester, we will be online never having met and I need to be extra mindful of anyone exhibiting noisy behaviors.
how to approach problems you might encounter ,and recognizng different types of students is very important
Great information that I will take from this module. Records management is one area I am constantly trying to clean up in order to be more efficient. The behavior management section will be helpful to refer back to with suggestions to put in place.
One method to assist with student attrition is to send an email reminding the student of their goals in education.
I have learned there are different types (labels) of learners as to how they respond to discussion forums. I also was surprised that e-mail is the most preferred method of communication between students and teachers. I would have thought a personal phone-call would have been preferred.
I learned just like in a traditional setting, record management or organization is key for success.
In order to manage the E-Learning Environment appropriately I need to keep in mind that I have to stablish:
*They feel alienated.
*The workload is too heavy.
*Competing responsibilities.
*Technical issues.
Following the guidelines to manage each fact, will let me help my students when they face any of the previous facts.
