Sure. I have successfully used Facebook with an online course. We used it (through a private class group) as a discussion board. Give it a try if you want. We did not use it as a personal site, but a learning group. We made that very clear.

I think it can be done but it needs to be closely monitored. You can set up "Groups" in Facebook and only accept certain members into the group. You can also make the group private so only members of the group can access any of the content. I can see this being beneficial for a Social Media, Networking or Career Preparation course. Students need to learn how to interact and behave properly online and Facebook can be a great tool to help them. However, I definitely think it has to be closely monitored.
