Two components used to help develop a successful online community are evaluating instructional strategies and interaction between the two levels-communication and collaboration. Communication is the basic level of discussion in an online format. Communication can be focused around readings, lectures, and anything students need clarified. Communication can occur synchronously or asynchronously.

It is hard to imagine a successful learning experience without both communication and collaboration. I agree with you, communication is the foundation for learning in the online environment! Once successful communication is established between the facilitator and students, and between the students; the community is formed, and then the learning process can "take flight"!

Communication and collaboration are essential in the online environment. It is important to think about the pros and cons of synchronous and asynchronous learning environments and which would provide the best learning environment. These types of learning can both be included in one course. Thanks!
