Hello Nate. You make a good point about well crafted rubrics removing potential excuses for poor student performance. If students are provided with a clear rubric, they should be able to follow the requirements with a minimum of confusion.

A rubric can provide an instructor with a consistent method to evaluate student assignments, so that grading is done the same way for each student. Additionally, it provides the students with an understanding of how the assignment will be graded.

Hello John. You make a good point. Rubrics are not only useful in helping students, but they also help instructors to be fair and consistent in their grading practices.

I believe that the role of a rubric is to minimize confusion and possible inequities in the grading system. By using rubrics, instructors are more likely to foster uniformity throughout the grading process. Rubrics are a means of commmunicating to students exactly what is expected of them in order to achieve a desired grade. The use of rubrics also tends to minimize grading disputes.

David,

Right on. Both the students and instructor benefit. Thanks for your input.

Arijana ,

The rubric is key in helping the students and instructor. Nice job.

Hi Tena,

It establishes what is expected and insures a method for the instructor to fairly evaluate output by the students.

David

Rubric has many roles; communicates expectations, sets standards, gives direction and guideline, creates opportunity for feedback, gives objective to the assignment, sets students up for success

Kimberly,

And, it helps the students as well. Nice job.

William and Nicole,

Agreed. Rubrics have helped me and my students immensely over the years. Thanks for your input.

The role of a rubric is to provide guidance to the student and consistency in grading for the instructor. I heavily rely on rubrics in my courses and review them with students via an on-line lecture as a way for students to understand the objectives of each assignment. I find that it is also helpful for students to better understand the overall task and how points are assessed during grading.

Nicole,

So agree with you. When I first started teaching online I had never used or heard of a rubric and was very frustrated grading assignments. Using rubrics became my lifeline. They finally made my job of grading easy and objective rather then subjective.

The role of the rubric is to give the student guidance on the assignments through specific guidelines with point values stating what is expected or needed in order to gain those points. For the instructor it provides an objective way to assess the students progress and knowledge of the material. These are essential for any course and gives us a means by which the student can be more comfortable with what the instructor is looking for.

Dale,

Yes, the key is that good rubrics help both the students and the instructor. Nice job.

Christi,

Right on. Rubrics help both students and instructors. Thanks.

Dr. Crews,
A rubric that is well written and objective will eliminate any guess work by the Instructor. It keeps both student and instructor on the same page.

I believe the rubric is a guide that allows the students to understand what is expected and how they will be assessed on each component. The rubric also allows the facilitator to be consistent with the grading criteria. Consistency is essential to providing feedback. I have found that students will share their feedback with other students.

Belinda,

Right on - rubrics help both instructors and students. The better we all understand the expectations and evaluate them properly, the better. Thanks!

The role of the rubric is used to evaluate students' responses. It allows consistency in grading. Also, a rubric can be given to students so they will know the requirements of the assignment.

John,

Yes, that's right. Rubrics helps both the students and the instructor. When we all understand the expectations and criteria for assessment, the better. Thank you.
