The role of a rubric is to give students notice what the expectations of the assignment is. You can break down the assignment into component parts and tell them how much each part is worth. That way, there is much less chances they will complain.
Trina,
Connecting clear criteria to the learning outcomes in the rubric is essential. Thanks for your feedback.
Beth,
Right on! Rubrics help both the instructor and students. Thanks!
Rubrics should clearly outline the goals and objectives of a class or assignment and then allow the intructor the ability to assess the student based on those goals or objectives.
The students needs to be able to see the rubric in advance of proceeding through a course or an assignment, so they know what is expected of them and then they need to be able to see the rubric showing an assessment of their work after they have completed the project or the class, so that they will have a clear understanding of what they can improve on or what they did well.
Thomas,
The criteria in the rubric should demand quality from the student to achieve at a high level. Thanks for your inut.
A rubric provides clear objectives and expectations for the student. It also provides the instructor with the specific objectives to ensure consistent grading and feedback across all students.
The role of the rubric is to establish a framework for student and instructor expectations for tasks. A well written rubric will provide the student a means of identifying all of the required elements of a task and the metric used for judging what each level of effort will correspond to when being scored. A student who wants to just meet expectations can see how much is required on a task to get the passing grade, while a student who wants to show mastery of a subject will be able to determine the quantity and quality required to get the perfect “Aâ€. The instructor is provided a metric to use to help ensure consistent grading practices are established and help provide the framework for how to assess the work presented.
David,
Yes, you noted students and instructors benefit. Nice job.
The role of a rubric is to be an assessment tool. Rubrics should include criteria that relate to specific outcomes and objectives of the course or assignment. Rubrics should provide students and instructors with a framework which communicates the requirements involved in the assessment. It is important to provide the rubrics to the students prior to whatever project, discussion, etc. is going to be assessed.
Mark,
Yes and they help both the instructor and students. That's a plus too. Thanks for your input.
I believe that a rubric does two things:
1. It establishes a step by step process that a student can follow to attain an end academic goal or hands on academic task.
2. It lends itself to making many academic tasks more objective in their grading methods.
Overall, rubrics provide and enhance a tremendous feedback process between the student and instructor.
Kevin,
And, rubrics help students understand the expectations of the asssignment better as well. Thanks!
The role of a rubric is to be able to grade any project, submitted by any student, fairly and objectively. It takes the subjectivity completely out of the equation.
Nitin,
Right on. And, it helps the instructor be more consistent in their evaluation. Thanks!
A rubric takes away the guesswork for the student to know what is expected and how they are graded.
Maritza,
Me too. I like for students to self- and peer-assess using the same rubric. It helps them understand the criteria better and it also provides an opportunity for them to give you feedback on the rubric so that you can edit if necessary.
Michael ,
The key is "good" rubric. They do help the instructor and the students clarify. Thanks!
For me, the rubric is a very important tool that comes into focus at various points in the course. I tell my students to grade their own work using that rubric. I ask them to review the rubric before they even begin the assignment. It allows an instructor to communicate expectations in a very objective systematic way and leaves little room for confusion if it is well developed.
Hello Dr. Crews,
Developing a good rubric for an assignment helps me to clarify the objectives I had in mind when I wrote the assignment, as well as the desired outcomes. It’s also helpful to students, as it makes clear the standards that are used in evaluating their work.
Best wishes,
Michael Luzius
Francis ,
Good way to word it - that we are all on the same page. And, that page should include learning outcomes. Nice job.
