For Health Care courses using the discussion board, writing examples and templates seems to be the best ways to assist with improve reading, writing, and communication skills. In developing courses I use Blooms Taxonomy to help advance writing skills and student abilities to evaluate and analyze what they read and summarize that in their academic writing. I coach to help them see the difference between reading and writing and academic reading and writing and how to strengthen skills based on their learning style, strengths and weaknesses. This all connects back to what we talked about in the first module with time management and internal motivation to improve and grow. In some introductory courses journal writing is helpful as well to assist the student in processing information and practicing writing and communication skills. Summarizing what is read, practicing, and communicating professionally is all part of the online world.Eric Oestmann

How do you help students improve their reading, writing, and communication skills?

Developing skills as a visual learner and working on compensation skills if a person is an auditory or kinesthetic learner can be the beginning assessment to help with the foundation of improving reading, writing, and communication.
Developing online platform skills and learning the tools to assist with reading, writing, and communication (spell check, chat, e-text, e-library…).

Through discussion boards and social learning theory the more one posts and interacts with peers the more they learn. This enables the student to practice reading, writing, and communication while working on the subject matter in a course.

Examples provide a visual and a tool to follow to help get writing started and a founding for academic writing. Critiquing others work or allowing in some classes to revise work based on feedback form al in the group setting allows for growth and improvement without the penalty which causes stress and apprehension which blocks learning.

Summarizing, analyzing, and evaluating (Blooms Taxonomy) what others write and the research helps with huger level thinking skills and communicating development.

Many techniques can be employed, all should be individualized by course, as per University policy, and for the individual.
