I am reminded of the importance and value from using rubrics. I will concentrate my focus on rubric development to ensure that my feedback is consistent, objective, and timely.

Buy-In is the key to effective communication

Communication and the establishment of an effective rubric are the key to managinf an online classroom.

I gained from this module that it is very important to design and use a rubric for good communication in the online class.  When I have an online class I will make sure to get lots of examples of rubrics on effective communication in an online course.

Rubrics are a great way to score students

The main idea is you need to have a rubric where you set the guideline of how many responses to classmates the students must have, along with a oint valuie for how the discussion will be graded. The one thing is that it should be specific with the details. Including how many words the inital discussion should be and how long the responses should be and when the due date is.

Collaboration among the instructor and students as well as among the students themselves is crucial to the facilitation of the course and student success.

Online learning will always be a work in progress. The learning components should be clear and concise for students to be able to navigate. You should always have an open communication with all students since some will need guidance and help more than others. Most of them will be willing to help their other fellow students so that thet all can succeed.

The importance of developing a good rubric and the consistency it provides for both teacher and student. I need to develop better rubrics. It's important to analyze communications carefully. The key is creating an online environment that is motivating for all students as well as encouraging while promoting respectfulness and value for our community members in a place where everyone feels safe to share, be understood and accepted.

I learn hoe rubics can help with evaluation of students

A rubric is an effective tool. It ensures and guides students through their performance in an assessment or project.

I will be taking advantage of Rubistar for developing by online rubrics!

It is critical to have guidelines/rules for any online group. Students must understand what is expected of them and what types of behaviors are discouraged or prohibited. An expectations statement offers a set of rules and regulations which serves as the value statement. The value statement should be clearly communicated within the community through the syllabus or handbook and subtly through modeling, and using discussion board moderation.  Also learned that rubrics provides consistency when grading/rating assignments.  Students will have a clear understanding of how their work will be graded and then can choose how to perform.

Communication guidelines should be discussed so that students take responsibility for learning. Ultimate goal for online programs should be to facilitate learning while building community.

"Effective online facilitation should engage, guide, and motivate learners, and provide a safe and conducive environment for learning." I couldn't agree with this statement more. This statement is the challenge of e-learning! We want the space to be a safe space, that will motivate and guide our learners. This section also really brought home the importance of using a rubric to share guidelines and expectations and then to provide feedback with evaluation.

Guidelines create a structure for the student and instructor to follow.  In order to measure how the student is communicating, a rubric should be used to provide the expectations of their online discussions.  The teacher becomes the Guide on the Side as students create a community where communication and collaboration exist together so that students develop strong relationships with each other and can share/discuss openly in these forums.

In addition to providing a rubric for online communication within our community, I think I will have to actually teach this skill, using one of our earliest units, and building a model discussion with students over the course of a few days.  This would at first be ungraded until students know what I expect, then with the (now familiar) rubric.

Rubrics help both teacher and student know what expectations are and fairly assess whether or not those expectations have been met.

Communication between all groups/individuals involved, along with rubrics and collaboration are all keys to measuring good communciation with students.

As an instructor, it is important to encourage and monitor communication during the course.

I have learned that when evaluating student posts a rubric can make the task easier and more consistent.  The instructor should set guidelines for posts and student interaction.
