Peter,
You have to do that! Thanks for pointing that out. What do you want your students to do with case studies has to be addressed.

Joan,
I agree. I happen to love case studies because it give me credibility :)
Dr. Kelly Wilkinson
Kerri,
It is a great tool. You can use the db to help students make the connections to real life and reflect on the assignments. Good post!
Dr. Kelly Wilkinson
William,
What a great assignment! I bet students transfer these skills to real life because of this type of assignment.
Dr. Kelly Wilkinson
Christina,
What a great course for authentic assessment. I love the terms student centered and career oriented in the same sentence! You make philosophy "real".
Dr. Kelly Wilkinson
Deborah,
Great assignment. Would you have to change that assignment much for an online course; probably not!
Dr. Kelly Wilkinson
Socorro,
True, you have to have a plan for implementation and a plan for grading and that must be articulated.
Dr. Kelly Wilkinson
Avis,
Nice! You are right; it does allow you to integrate business current events in courses. Case studies are perfect for that.
Dr. Kelly Wilkinson
Adib,
What a great use of the DB. They can be great to connect all of the assignments to the real world.
Dr. Kelly Wilkinson
Austin,
That is exactly what it is. It makes it easy for you to use the data and for the students to use the data also.
Dr. Kelly Wilkinson
Deborah,
You nailed it! Portfolios should tell a story. They do have a purpose beyond class! I have may students create a website that represents their skills. (the course is web design).
Dr. Kelly Wilkinson
Dr. Cecil,
Great post! This way of teaching and representing math worked for me! I found numbers made since when the represented something real.
Dr. Kelly Wilkinson
Michael,
Do your students have a choice in what you show the parents?
Dr. Kelly Wilkinson
Dr. Kimberly,
You make a great point! It does seem endless. Since you were a student that used portfolio, what advice would you give to instructors thinking about using it?
Dr. Kelly Wilkinson
Alfred,
I do think good alternative assessment (like yours) is such a great way for students to "see" what is expected of them in the real world. Great post!
Dr. Kelly Wilkinson
Kimberly,
What a great way to utilize authentic/alternative assessment. Portfolios are a great vehicle for assessment.

I have designed projects where students must assess the value (positive or negative) of grading on the curve. We used actual class data, calculated the various statistics measures needed to determine if we had a normal distribution and the percent of scores that should fall in each grade range.
Students then had to calculate the z score for their grade and explain why grading on a curve would be advantageous of disadvantageous.
To protect student privacy, I use data from a previous quarter.
Due to content restrictions set forth by the institution where I teach I am limited in the use of authentic assessment in my classroom. However, I do add additional questions and case studies that prompt students to work on real word scenarios.
The school’s online environment incorporates tasks and scenarios that prompt students to address both the theoretical aspects and real world applications of the topics/concepts that were covered in the course. This helps me as the instructor to determine if the student is just repeating what was conveyed during the online lecture or what was covered their text versus using his/her skills and knowledge and applying them when relating how the topics/concept they would influence organizational situations and outcomes.
We use case studies all the time. That being said, we tend to keep them based to the chapters at hand. We use the same rubric we use for our forums. The students get used to a set of “rules†for free text.
