I have standard tasks that need to be completed daily, weekly, monthly & annually. I finish these tasks as soon as possible before the deadline. I like to stay one week ahead in case "emergencies/urgent" matters come up...which they do everyday.
Although eveything is important, I tend to do the easiest tasks first, spending more time with difficult ones.
Much of my work depends on others finishing their parts. I always give them deadlines that are days ahead of the actual, which gives me time to review and revise if necessary.
First on the list should be any time sensatiive items.Prioritize by due dates. Next would any items on the list that would involve accredation items. Next have to return any student calls within in a timely manner. So prioritizing by time senasative items.
Thanks, Thomas. Prioritizing is very important. The trick is to figure out on what basis priorities should be set.
What do you personally believe is the most important factor in setting priorities in your current position?
Proitizing is so important. So many of us start many projetcs and then never get to complete them or do not do them with the quality they should be done with.
I make a list first. The I go back and divide it ito four sections
Immmedate tasks
Cant wait for the next da ytask
weekly taskes
Monthly tasks
I use the Sticky Notes feature on Windows 7. This allows me to keep sticky notes on my computer screen at all times. I stay focused on the tasks I need to complete for the day, week, or month. This is my to-do-list; it changes often.
Thanks, Marie. Many folks feel uncomfortable about closing their doors to issolate themselves for important tasks that will go quickly if uninterrupted. It is an important thing to do. keep doing it if it is working for you.
Thanks, Thomas. This sounds like a good organizational system once you have established which goals are the most important.
Whta are things you consider when making this determination?
I make a list starting wit hthe most important goals to the least important goal .
Under the goals I list tasks. I check off the task as they are complteted
I utilize my Outlook calendar and use the snooze feature. My calendar is also connected to my I Phone. I used to keep a separate calendar for personal and business but that got to be too much of a hassle until I purchased an I Phone which has helped me greatly.
On my calendar I identify A, B, and C priorities and work on those in that order. Or I should say I try to.
I am a bit of a proscrainator so anything I can do to keep me on track I will try. Often times I still jot down A, B, C items before I leave work at night. This way when I come in I immediately see what I need to work on for that day.
If I am working on a project that is really vital I close my door and make myself unavailable for an hour or two.
Marie
Thanks, Valencia.
What are some specific things that you consider as you decide what are the priorities for the day?
I try to keep a list of all the things that I must get done. I then make sure that the list is in order of what must get done first.
Thanks, Christopher.
What are the specific things you consider when establishing levels of priority?
By using a daily list and prioritizing what must be done at that time
Thanks, Jason.
What are the specific things that you feel make a task more important than others? In other words, how do you decide what to do first?
I try to start each day deciding what tasks are most improtant, and tackle them first.
Thanks, Karen.
You have a lot of responsibilities. Do you ever find that your FT IT responsibilities make completing your responsibilities at the school more difficult? If so, what do you do to make sure you can give your all in both places?
I am an IT professional in my day job and all goals and tasks have to be prioritized. Having this type of discipline within my full time profession benefits my abibility for time management as I am teaching 5 classes per week.
Set up other prioroties by writing what must be done for the buffet prep. for that day and when finished we check it off the white board. Each day we write perp down on a white board it helps to keep track on easch buffet.
When I planning for the lesson for that day I use a powerpoint for lecture to help the student make a great notebook, it also keep my lecture to stay on track. When I demo on how to take the bones out of a chicken I have the students fallow me step by step with there own chicken. At the end of my day I check my to do list to see if I keep to the times needed to do the demo and lectures.
