Searching Within

I like that this course begins with the challenge to avoid quickly jumping out of one's current organizational boat just because of low morale or poor job fit. I've been with the same organization for over 8 years and have held 5 different roles during that time. Refelecting on those roles and the pros of cons of each of those roles while taking this course really helped me to understand why some roles were a better fit for me than others.

I agree with your statment totally. I feel like its much easier transition to look within the organization rather than just looking outside. You are already familiar with co-workers and so forth. The only the that will change is your position and that for the better

Richard,

this is very true & we need to realize that all jobs come with difficulties & bring challenges. Sometimes we need to stick it out.

Ryan Meers, Ph.D.

Often times there are opportunities right in front of us if we just choose to look rather than immediately look to a different organization.

Often times, simply "jumping ship" gives a temporary relief which is often followed by remorse when we realize that the grass is not always greener elsewhere and that to a large extent we determine our experiences.

Stacie,
this is a great testimonial & I've found that often we are wanting to jump ship when things aren't exactly clicking the way we would want them to, & those are the times to stick with it & learn from the situation.

I must confess that I’m guilty of wanting to jump ship when it came to me being unhappy in my current role. I thought my overall remedy was to look for employment with another company; versus utilizing what was right in front of me all along. It took me a minute to realize that gaining additional knowledge was the key for me; instead of focusing on the items that I felt were against me. Once I did that, those items that I felt were against me, were ultimately for me. I really had to change my way of thinking, and utilize my internal resources, my manager, as well as, my mentor at the time.

Yes, it’s important to gain additional knowledge, but make sure the knowledge that you’re gaining is part of your core values. Even if it’s not, I think you can find a way to make it fit into your current role until you’re able to find a position that fits.

This was an excellent course. It provided me with some beneficial key factors that I can utilize going forward, especially when it comes to my own personal career.

Janeane,
absolutely & depending on the size of the organization there can be many opportunities within.

I agree with this statement. One may become bored and/or comfortable with the current position and may seek employment outside of current organization. The thought that slips the mind is that there may be a good career opportunity right under your nose.

Ryan,
yes, there are ups & downs in every job & with every organization, we have to be careful to follow the proper path for us.
