Marlene,
The school is only successful if they finish and doubly if the are placed. We look at every enrollment as a graduate and employee in the career field of their choice.

Natalie,
This is good to hear! Finding the right fit for both is enrolling a graduate of your school and changing their life. Great goals for both.

We would guide the student to a possibly lesser position of study, but in the same field, where he/she may be able to work up to the desired position the student came to the school to study for. We would not want the student to over shoot his/her goals and study matter, but if we feel the student is unable to complete the rquired material, we would suggest that many others have started with more realistic goals, and slowly move to the level that they seek in the future.

I think it is never good to pre-judge however, It is not fair to set someone up for failure so I would nicely let the canidate know I dont feel the program is a good fit for what they are looking for. However, if the student persist then I do not stop them.

We can suggest a similar course that he/she might be a beter fit and less demands that he/she will have a much better chance of success. I would not like to tell the student to return in a couple of months, because sometimes we might loose the student and he/she might not return to finish their education.

Each student that comes in my office is a potential candidate for enrollment. There are certain students however, that just may not meet the standards of employers in our area, and so for that reason I will work with the student until I believe they are capable to represent themselves and my institution accordingly.

These are all really good suggestions :) thank you. Fortunately in my position at our campus I don’t have to run into that situation but I wondered as to how a rep would handle that.

john,
Everyone should be treated the same regardless of their individual race. Personal biases should be checked at the door.

Patty Aronoff

james,
This is why it is so important to incorporate Career Services in the student experience from day one. If we look at the first day of school as the first day of their next job, we are setting goals and preparing for that day.

Patty Aronoff

Adolfo,
We all need positive reinforcement in life. Providing an avenue to reach your dreams is important even if it isn't the same path you were sure you were going to take.

Patty Aronoff

Jerry,
It is important to find an avenue of being positive and finding encouragement in directing the student's motivation. Many have only heard the word "no" and not given alternatives.

Patty Aronoff

angela,
We should always couch it outside the negative. Refrain from using the word "no" or "can't" or any other negative. Turn it around to more reflective type words and statements like, "consider" or "think about"....

It is so important to interview everyone the same regardless of race, in doing his you can avoid discrimination

Of course we want to make sure they understand that they may be paying for an education and spending a yr + in school only to find out that in the end, they may have a very difficult time finding employment in a field that looks deeply into their background.

The student has all his right to know why he isn't a good fit for the program and provide him/her with suggestions on what they can do to improve or change that problem. He/she should be told to continue working on what was recommended for them and return in a couple of months to be reevaluated. That will encourage the student to force themselves harder and want to be better for their return in the near future.

The way we handle this situation is we encourage the student to improve on the particular area that we feel they are lacking in & to reapply in a few months. This gives the candidate confidence that we really do care an would like them to attend, which alleviates any discriminations issues.
