Relating to your students

It is important to listen to your students needs/fears/passions. These are all clues to further asist them in their ideal program.

Jessica,

Excellent philosophy! You are connecting in a very personal way with your clients. People want others to listen and care.

I believe it is very important to listen to your students needs. I remember when I was going to school and I had all the fears/needs/passions I was going through. I can understand where a student is coming from and can try to put what I learned when I was having the same feelings into my job to make it more personable then just saying what they want to hear.

Andrew,
The better the relationship, the better the experience will be at school. People want to be around people who care about them and believe in them.

I have noticed that the better the relationship with the student that is created, the better the chances are of the student starting and of the student being happy in there program.

Stephanie,

Most of us do not want to disclose our shortcomings to people we do not know. In bridging the relationship, we come to know each other and knowing support is there will bring out those difficult conversations.

Some students will use other excuses because they may be embarrassed or ashamed over what it is that they are truly feeling or thinking. I try to uncover these true concerns because nothing is worse than losing a potential student and having no idea what happened.
At the same time, I don't want to be pushy or seem desperate to gain the answer because that might scare them away or cause them to clam up, and then I will never know the real reason behind their concerns.

Michelle ,
I would agree. Taking a personal interest is certainly dependent upon the individual. Some like the personal touch, others find it intrusive. Knowing your customer will guide you.

Francesca,
Absolutely! Effective listening is such an important part of what we do. Follow through with honesty and integrity and you have a recipe for success.

Lissette,
Caring about your students cannot be faked. People see the truth.

As an Admissions Specialist, I speak to prospective students every day. I feel that if I make their experience as stressless as possible it will only ensure that they will trust that we care for our students. By being a little personal on the phone doesn't hurt the process at all. It makes them feel like an individual and not a number.

It's definitely important to listen to your students because it allows you to identify possible objections that may arise. Also, it will allow you to identify possible conditions that may not allow them to pursue a certain program. Listening to your students will enable you to ask additional questions and really get to the root of what they're trying to express to you.

Although it may seem daunting at times, it is a responsibility as an educator to engage the student and truly care about their success in the program. I feel honored to be part of an institution that sincerely takes pride in the execution of their programs. Its refreshing to know that there are individuals that feel passionate enough about their career and strive to instill that in their student body.

Mike,
Truly listening to the students is a well defined best practice. We can learn so much if we just listen.

Ron,
Students can strongly influence other students. Making sure that students have true and correct information is very important as they emerge as leaders.

Patty Aronoff

It is I think the most important part. You have to listen to the student so you can do what is best for them even if it is not with your institution.

Listen to class leaders as well as other students. They can provide you with a forum to communicate.

Paul,

Developing an understanding of your student is a way to assist them in their educational venture. Just being recognized past the enrollment agreement shows that you are interested in them as an individual.

Patty Aronoff

I think this is vital to provide not only your students with the best possible experience but also assist the intructors with understanding the way to get the best from each student

ALICIA,

Good communication and the getting to know the individual will increase your retention and number of graduates. We all want to be recognized as individuals.
